LACUNA
Projections Design
In this production of Carmen, there was a focus on predestination as reflected in the use of tarot. Starting the opera, there is a reading of tarot cards: the Eight of Swords, the Tower, and Death. Foreshadowing deception, monumental change, and irreversible actions, all events that will transpire to Don José and Carmen throughout the opera.
As the opera progresses, the content of the projections reflect the emotions and locations of the characters through color, style, and movement. The rose is seductive and flirtatious as is Carmen in "Habanera," focused with the color and slow movement of the rose opening and closing. In Micaëla's "C'est les contrabandiers le refuge ordinaire," the Moon tarot provides an emotional backdrop of the anxiety and fear she holds of her and Don José's futures.
